Short stories are amazing in their ;variety. Yet eery short story has the same basic elements: character, setting and plot.
Characters are the people or animals in a story. Most short stories focus on one or two main characters. Sometimes, minor characters are used to help the story along. In The Open Window for instance, the main characters are Mrs. Sappleton, Vera and Mr. Nuttel, because the action revolves around them. The lost husband and two brothers function as minor characters; the reader does not get to know them well. Saki, the writer, concentrates on the relationship that develops between the three main characters.

How does Vera show confidence?

Setting is the time and place in a story happens. In The Open Window the story takes place in a British country house during the early part of the twentieth century. There is always a good reason for the setting a writer chooses - where the people are affects what they say and do. The house with the open window creates a sense of mystery that Saki wanted to achieve.

Plot is the story plan. It is the action or sequence of events and contains the conflict or problem to be solved. Mr. Nuttel for example wants a room in a quiet retreat; the lost shows what happens to him. Man plots consist of a begging a middle and an end. First the writer begins by introducing the setting. the conflict and the characters. Then in the middle of the story, the actions build to a climax. or turning point. In the Open Window, the turn point comes when Mr. Nuttel runs from the house in terror. In the ;end the writer resole the problem and ties up loose sends. Saki end the Open wind by revealing that Vera with her vivid imagination probably make up the whole story..
